grandma maymes famous molasses cookies

I have had several requests for "my" molasses cookie recipe. Actually, I have to give credit to my grandma mayme who made these cookies for all family gatherings for over 50 years. They are famous in the Griffin family. My kids are not really fans, but adults usually are. So here is the recipe. Let me know if you try them and how they turn out- and if you like them.
1 cup shortening
1/2 c molasses
1/4 c water
1 heaping c sugar
2 beaten eggs
4 1/2 c flour
1/4 t salt
1/3 t cloves
1/3 t ginger
1 t cinnamon
1/4 t allspice
1 t soda

Mix well. Make two rolls, wrap in wax paper and put in refrigerator overnight. Cut in slices and bake at 325 8-10 minutes.
Frost with cream cheese frosting: 4 oz cream cheese, 1/4 c butter, 3 c powdered sugar 1/2 t vanilla, enough milk to make it the consistency you want. Enjoy!

Lee, just looking at the finished product is making me salivate!
Besides her diaries, nothing brings Mayme back faster than those cookies:)

This is the one cookie that I will actually bake, perhaps today even. I think the secret is to slice them thick and make sure you don't over cook them so they are nice and soft...crunchy ees no good.

What is it about kids not liking those cookies? I don't think I liked them much as a kid either, but I sure do love them now! Thanks for always having cookies at your house :)

You are the cookie Queen. But I do have to say that I like my Annie's cookies better. I don't know what she does different than you, but hers are just so soft. But I am really picky about my cookies. I like them medium rare. I cook mine at 300 degrees and take them out when the center is just barely past the dough stage.

WHAT? Annie- as in my sister Maryann??? I am shocked! What are you talking about? Annie makes cookies? I have rarely been on the receiving end on those- i'm always on the giving end. This is very upsetting. I'm going to have to rethink my whole life's work. . .

LOL!!! Lee and I have already discussed this, but I want to clarify for everyone else. Lee's cookies are superb! She makes many varieties and I happily eat some every time I visit. I was only referring to my mom's molasses, which were soft and chewy. Lee has asked me to give her molasses one more try. I will eat and report. But I never meant to slander the reputation of Lee's cookies. They are the best, Jerry, the best!

Lee, I forgot all about these cookies but thanks for reminding me about them! I think I started appreciating them more when my mom made them as I got older and they are definitely a delicious snack!

By the way sisters, here is how you spell my name....Janet, Mom, are you listening? It's Capital M, small a,r,y. Then we do another capital letter. This time it is an A. Then we close out with a small n, and then another n. We leave a space after the word Mary. Hello McFly. Yes, I spelled it Maryann in school so people would stop calling me Mary, but COME ON people. It's been 38 years for @#$* sake. Lee, I didn't expect this from you:(

Lee--I think you hit a nerve. Yikes! I wonder who was more offended...Mom at her spelling, or you at my suggesting your cookies weren't the best.
